What is

Cerebrolysin

Cerebrolysin is a peptide-based medication that is composed of a complex mixture of neuropeptides and amino acids derived from purified brain proteins. It has been extensively researched and is used to treat a wide array of neurological conditions and cognitive impairments. The formulation of Cerebrolysin is unique in that it includes active peptide fragments that closely mimic the effects of endogenous nerve growth factors, which play a crucial role in neuroprotection, neuroplasticity, and neuroregeneration.

The components of Cerebrolysin are designed to penetrate the blood-brain barrier and directly influence brain cells, promoting repair and enhancing overall brain function. This makes it a potent therapeutic agent for various brain-related conditions. Its multifaceted mechanisms of action are primarily aimed at improving neuronal survival, enhancing synaptic plasticity, and fostering the growth and differentiation of neurons.

Benefits

  • Neuroprotection
  • Stroke Recovery
  • Mood Improvement
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Cognitive Enhancement
  • Neurodegenerative Diseases

Protocols

Provided in 10 ml/ampoule and 10 ml/vial

  • Initiation: Cerebrolysin therapy is initiated to support neuroprotection, cognitive enhancement, and overall brain health by modulating neurotrophic factors and neurotransmitter systems.
  • Initial Dose: Begin with 0.5 ml subcutaneously once daily for the first two weeks to assess tolerance and minimize potential side effects.
  • Titration: If well tolerated, increase the dose to 1 ml subcutaneously once daily or 10 ml IV infusion after the initial two-week period.
  • Maintenance: Maintain the dose at 1 ml subcutaneously once daily for 40-80 days or 10-50 ml IV infusion, depending on the specific needs and response of the patient.
  • Duration: Cerebrolysin can be administered either subcutaneously or intravenously:

Subcutaneous (SC):

  • Weeks 1-2: 0.5 ml once daily
  • Week 3 and onwards: 1 ml once daily for 40-80 days

Intravenous (IV):

  • 10-50 ml IV infusion per session as needed

*Provided as a standard protocol, dose may vary depending on the condition of the patient.
*The dosage of Cerebrolysin may be adjusted based on the individual’s response, medical history, and specific treatment goals.

  • Known hypersensitivity to Cerebrolysin or any component of the formulation.
  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless specifically advised by a healthcare provider.
  • Patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment should consult with their healthcare provider before starting this treatment.
  • Caution in patients with a history of seizure disorders.

  • Regular monitoring of cognitive function and overall brain health to assess the effectiveness of the treatment.
  • Periodic assessments to check for any adverse effects and to adjust the treatment as necessary.
  • Consultation with a healthcare professional before starting Cerebrolysin to ensure it is appropriate for the patient’s health condition.
  • Patients should maintain a healthy lifestyle, including proper diet and exercise, to support the effectiveness of the treatment.

Procedure

Reconstitution

  • Draw the required dose of Cerebrolysin (10-50 ml) from the ampoule using a sterile syringe.
  • Dilute the Cerebrolysin in an appropriate volume of isotonic saline solution (e.g., 100 ml).
  • Gently mix the solution to ensure even distribution.

  • Prepare the IV infusion by diluting 10-50 ml of Cerebrolysin in an appropriate volume of isotonic saline solution (e.g., 100 ml).
  • Set up the IV infusion system and ensure all connections are secure and sterile.
  • Administer the IV infusion over a period of 15-60 minutes, depending on the volume and patient tolerance.

  • Store Cerebrolysin ampoules in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Ensure the ampoules are tightly sealed to maintain the integrity of the solution.
  • Administer the IV infusion over a period of 15-60 minutes, depending on the volume and patient tolerance.
  • Use a new syringe for each IV infusion preparation.
  • Monitor for any unusual symptoms and report them to a healthcare provider immediately.

Clinical Research

Study:

Cerebrolysin for Neuroprotection and Neurorehabilitation

Source:

MDPI, Springer, BMC Neurology

Results:

Cerebrolysin is a neuropeptide preparation derived from porcine brain tissue that contains several neurotrophic factors, which are critical for neuroprotection and neurorehabilitation. It has been extensively studied for its potential in treating neurodegenerative diseases, stroke, and traumatic brain injuries.

Cerebrolysin mimics the biological activity of neurotrophic factors, promoting neuronal survival, neurogenesis, and synaptic plasticity. It also has antioxidant properties, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain. These actions collectively contribute to its neuroprotective and neurorestorative effects.

Cerebrolysin is generally well-tolerated with minimal side effects. The most common side effects include mild headaches and injection site reactions. There is no significant evidence of toxicity, making it a safe option for long-term use in neuroprotection and rehabilitation.

Cerebrolysin for acute ischaemic stroke

We found seven studies in 1773 people who had had an acute ischaemic stroke. The studies looked at the effect of giving Cerebrolysin alongside medicines to prevent and dissolve blood clots (standard therapy) during the first 48 hours after a stroke. The studies compared this treatment with standard therapy alone or standard therapy plus a […]

Beneficial effect of cerebrolysin on moderate and severe head injury patients: result of a cohort study

Cerebrolysin is used as a neurotrophic agent for the treatment of ischemic stroke and Alzheimer’s Disease. Exploratory studies in patients with post-acute traumatic brain injury have shown that this treatment might help improve recovery. Aim of this study was to investigate whether addition of Cerebrolysin to the initial treatment regimen of moderate and severe head […]
