What is

SS-31

SS-31 is a class of cell-permeable small peptides, which selectively resides on the inner mitochondrial membrane and possesses intrinsic mitochondrial protective capacities. Specifically, SS-31 (also known as MTP-131) is a water-soluble mitochondria-targeting peptide that attenuates mitochondrial reactive oxygen species production and cytochrome c release. This peptide has been shown to reverse decline in diabetes, attenuate transverse aortic constriction-induced pulmonary arterial hypertension and heart failure, and rapidly rejuvenates oxidative phosphorylation in aged mice.

Protocols

Provided as a 10mg lyophilized vial

  • Initiation: SS-31 therapy is initiated to provide mitochondrial protection and improve cellular function.
  • Initial Dose: Begin with 5 mg (0.5 ml or 50 units) subcutaneously once daily (SCOD) to assess tolerance and minimize potential side effects.
  • Titration: If well tolerated, the dose may be increased to 10 mg (1 ml or 100 units) subcutaneously once daily after the initial period of assessment.
  • Maintenance: Maintain the dose at 5-10 mg (0.5-1 ml or 50-100 units) subcutaneously once daily for ongoing mitochondrial protection and cellular function improvement.
  • Duration: SS-31 is administered once daily.
  • Ongoing: 5-10 mg (0.5-1 ml or 50-100 units) of SS-31 once daily

Procedure

Reconstitution

  • Draw 1 ml of sterile water for injection into a syringe.
  • Inject the sterile water into a vial containing 10 mg of SS-31 peptide.
  • Gently swirl the vial until the peptide is fully dissolved.

  • Remove the cap from a tuberculin syringe.
  • Draw the reconstituted SS-31 solution into the syringe to the required dosage (0.5 ml or 50 units for 5 mg, 1 ml or 100 units for 10 mg).
  • Clean the selected injection site with an alcohol swab.
  • Pinch the sanitized skin and insert the needle at a 90-degree angle.
  • Administer the injection subcutaneously.

  • Store the remaining SS-31 solution in the refrigerator at 2-8°C.
  • Before the next use, clean the vial top with an alcohol swab.
  • Use a new syringe for each administration.
  • Ensure to rotate injection sites (abdomen, thigh, or upper arm) to minimize skin irritation. )
